We started Shuhari because we saw the potential for large language models (LLMs) to create an entirely new ecosystem of software, ushering in new design paradigms and completely novel applications. When we set out, we wanted to build something that pushed the boundaries of what is possible with software, something that we cared about personally and something that created tremendous value for our customers. 

We knew that if we pushed the boundaries of what’s possible with software, we could help shape the next generation of technology. We knew that if we cared about what we’re building personally, we would enjoy working on it and be inspired to continue persevering no matter what. And we knew that if we created tremendous value for our customers, we can build a great business that impacts people in a positive way. 

So we chose personal growth. 

Personal growth is an area we care deeply about. It embodies learning, improving, self-awareness, self-love, curiosity, courage, and becoming who you were meant to be. We’re lifelong students and love learning, growing and evolving as human beings. And we wanted a name that captured the essence of this: Shuhari.

Shuhari (守破離)

Shuhari is a Japanese concept that describes the three stages of learning on the path to mastery. While it is primarily applied to martial arts, its wisdom applies to anything. This resonated with us because our vision is to help people grow into who they’re meant to become. 

Shuhari breaks down into three stages:

守 Shu: Follow the Rules

“Protect”, “Obey” - follow the rules. The first stage of learning requires you to learn the fundamentals, to learn the way that things have been done. This is true in anything you learn; sports, music, academic subjects, art, business, or any skill, every journey starts by learning what already exists today. This gives you a foundation to grow from. 

破 Ha: Break the Rules

“Detach”, “Digress” - break the rules. Once you have a solid foundation, you can start experimenting and innovating. You take chances and try new things, exploring areas that others have not. This is the stage where you develop your unique style, figuring out how to make something your own. 

離 Ri: Transcend the Rules

“Leave”, “Separate” - transcend the rules. The final stage represents the mastery of a subject, a flow state or state of nirvana. It’s where your intuition takes over, your creativity flows effortlessly, and you elevate beyond anything that exists in that subject.

When we discovered Shuhari, we knew it was meant for us. It captured not only our entrepreneurial journey, but the deeper human journey we’re all on, of learning, growing and becoming.
